Architect/Contractor
The Toronto firm of Darling and Pearson was responsible
for the design of the Grain Exchange Building. With
branches in Winnipeg and Regina, this partnership became
one of the most prolific in Canada (see Appendix I for
biographies). It has received 40 points from the Historical
Buildings Committee.
The original contractors were the local firm Kelly Brothers
and Mitchell. In 1880, Thomas (1855-1939) and Michael
(1844-1923) Kelly formed Kelly Brothers Contracting. Two other
brothers joined the firm which built numerous structures
throughout the city, In 1903, they changed the name to the
Manitoba Construction Company, then two years later became
Kelly Brothers and Mitchell, reflecting a new organization. By
1908, the name had again changed to Thomas Kelly and Sons.
Other work by Kelly Brothers and Mitchell included The Imperial
Bank of Canada, 441 Main Street (1906-07), Bank of Toronto, 456
Main Street (1906-1907), and the Canadian Northern Railway
Shops, Fort Rouge (1906-1907). (15)
